The Poky Little Puppy Activity Guide

Today I’ve got another fun lesson to share with you! This time, it’s The Poky Little Puppy Activity Guide on vocabulary and comprehension. It’s meant to be used with the Little Golden Book The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowery. The lesson is for Preschool-1st grade students, and has discussion questions, vocabulary words, a handwriting worksheet, and a couple fun dog-themed crafts for the children to make that I know they will enjoy!

All About the Lesson

Discussion Questions & Vocabulary Words

The questions on the page below are for you to ask your students. They are designed to start a discussion about the story and get your students showing just how much they understood and remember.

The vocabulary words are some more uncommon words found in the story for the students to learn. The definitions of the words are given. After you have explained the words to your students, have them use the words in a sentence. This will show whether or not they understood what the words mean.

Handwriting Worksheet

Have your students practicing tracing and writing words from the story with this handwriting worksheet. They will be writing vocabulary words and other words that were in the story, so you can combine learning the lesson topic with improving handwriting skills.

Dog Coloring Activity

The students will color the dog picture below and then cut it out. They will glue it onto a background of colored construction paper. If they want, they can decorate the paper around the picture with sequins, glitter glue, pom poms, stickers, or any other fun craft supplies. They can also make a border for the picture from another sheet of construction paper.

Dog Mask

Activity: Make a dog paper plate mask.

Materials: Paper plate, scissors, string or yarn, hole punch, craft glue, colored pencils, crayons, or markers,

Directions: The students can color the bottom side of the paper plate if they want to. Then they, or the teacher, will cut out the dog face. There is a color version and a grayscale version. It is up to the teacher which one is used. The teacher will need to cut out the eyes on the dog face. Then the students will glue it onto the bottom side of the paper plate. The teacher will cut holes in the plate to match the eyes on the dog. Use the hole punch to make two holes on the edge of the plate. The holes should line up with the bottom of the dog’s eyes. Then the teacher will cut and tie pieces of string or yarn onto the holes and tie the mask around the student’s head just above the student’s ears.
